Meet
Diane Howard

Diane is a 41-year resident of Redwood City. She is active in the community and takes pride in her many leadership roles, volunteer contributions, and fundraising activities. 

Diane has an accomplished history representing the community’s interests in various City leadership roles. Diane was elected to the City Council from 1994-2009 and was re-elected in November 2013. Diane served as the Mayor (2019-2021), was a former Mayor (1997-1999) and also former Vice Mayor (1995-1997, 2007-2009, and 2017-2019). 

In Community Spirit

Diane has held the following regional board and committee appointments: current Board Member, HEART, SMC Housing & Regional Trust Board; current member, Home for All Advisory Board; former member, 150th Sesquicentennial Committee; current Chair of the Pride and Beautification Committee; current Co-Chair of the San Mateo County Water Transit Advocates; current Chair of the Water Emergency Transit Authority Citizens Advisory Committee, Member of the Airport Land Use Committee, and Former Chair of the Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance. 

Other community and regional appointments include: Board Member with Kainos Home and Training Center; Board Member with Redwood City International; current member of Redwood City’s Downtown Business Group; Board Member of the Sequoia Awards, the RWC Arts Group, the Redwood City Women’s Club, a former 20-year Board Member with the Sequoia YMCA, and a member of the Redwood City/San Mateo County Chamber of Commerce. 

Leadership Roles

Diane also held prior leadership roles as the past Chair and committee member of the Housing and Human Concerns Committee (1984-1994) and past Chair and committee member of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Committee (1982-1994). 

Diane has received various community recognitions and awards for her service to the local community including the Sequoia Awards Outstanding Individual Award in Redwood City (2016-2017), Silicon Valley Volunteer Recognition Award for Service to the Sequoia YMCA (2010-2011), and the YMCA Mid-Peninsula Red Triangle for Volunteerism Award (2003-2004).

Diane is active with the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, and Arts Redwood City; a prior mentor at Sequoia High School (2016-2017); and is proud to have established a booth at the Redwood City Kiwanis Farmer’s Market to meet your local city council member.

Diane Howard grew up in East Islip, Long Island, New York.  Diane gained her college eduction at Suffolk County Community College, Selden, New York, and her nursing degree at Lewis Wilson School of Nursing in Lindenhurst, New York; she is a retired Orthopedic Nurse. Other career accomplishments include 28 years as an office manager of a family medical practice and three years as a Physician Relations Representative at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City.

Diane is happily married to Dr. Steven Howard. Their son, Geoffrey, is a former Marine and a current nurse. His wife, Irene, is a nurse and they live in Knoxville, Tennessee. 

A unique tidbit about Diane is that she is the oldest of eight children and is the only sibling to have come out West. All four sisters and three brothers live on the East Coast.

Diane loves music and golfing.
